Hello! It’s great to meet you!

New photo of Joe.
Holy new photo, Batman!

Hey there. My name’s Joseph, but most everyone I know just calls me Joe. Thanks for visiting my website, Almost Epic!

I’m a thirtysomething Indianapolis native and resident who has a really strong love for technology, writing, and being creative. That’s mostly why this site exists — as a place to dabble in the things that I love. Those things usually have something to do with animals and wildlife conservation, new and emerging technology, earth and space sciences, food and beverage, music, film and television, video games, comic books, art and literature, reading tarot, playing with WordPress, journaling, knitting, reading and writing, and a whole mess of other varied interests.

In addition to keeping this site online through its many different iterations, I also work full-time, go to school part-time, and serve as dad to two wonderful feline furballs named Tigger and Rufus! Interested in knowing more? Check out the About page!

Talk to Me!

I’m always up for great conversation and particularly like being able to do it here on the web. What can I say? I articulate my thoughts better when I can write them out! Not only can you talk to me via post comments or through the Contact page, but also in Almost Epic’s very own forum: the Talk page!

It’s super easy! Just sign in with your existing Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ account, or sign up for an standalone account here for the Talk page! We’ll be off and chatting about anything and everything in no time! Talk to you soon!

It’s been two weeks since my triumphant return to formal education. Finally beginning my college journey on January 17th had me both nervous and excited. It was the first time I’d set foot in the classroom since my high school graduation in the summer of 2003. Would I remember how to do this? What was the parking situation going to be like? What about my teachers? But it was time to

No More Resolutions

After the last several years of making New Year’s Resolutions that ultimately never stuck, I’ve become one of those people. You know the type. The people that claim that New Year’s Resolutions are stupid. The people that drink their bubbly when the clock strikes midnight and call it a year. We’re like this for a reason. Not because we aren’t hopeful that 2017 will be

New Year Review: 2016 Has No Chill!

By now, it goes without saying that 2016 was a pretty chaotic year. We endured what was arguably the most insane election in United States history. Elsewhere in the world, Britain has officially become divided while atrocities in places like Aleppo are at an almost apocalyptic level. There were a lot of other events that made this past year one of the worst on a global scale. And yes, we even

Christmas at the Zoo

My mother and grandmother were both huge fans of Christmas. Since the two of them have been long gone though, my family struggles a bit to get into the spirit. Last year I tried making up for it by putting up the first tree in years. I bought presents and hung stockings. There were even indoor twinkle lights and tinsel. It was really nice. But I don’t think it did much to boost the feeling

The ‘Gilmore Girls’ Are Gorgeous As Ever

The Gilmore Girls are back! The world was finally invited back to the charming town of Stars Hollow yesterday as we marked the premiere of Netflix’s latest revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, the follow-up to the WB Network’s quirky dramedy that aired from 2000-2007. It has been nearly a decade since the original series went off the air with a less-than-stellar seventh season

My Thanksgiving Top Ten!

Ahhh… Thanksgiving. One of my favorite holidays (if not my absolute favorite holiday) is fast approaching. Can you really blame me? I’m one of those people who firmly believes that getting to enjoy good food is one of the best experiences life has to offer! Anyone could probably tell just by taking one look at me! And Thanksgiving is a day that totally encourages Americans around the

What Would Buffy Do?

I’ve been trying to find the words to make sense of this election since I saw the results this morning. The first thing I did was begin to compose a lengthy Facebook post defending my vote and why I did it. I ultimately thought better of this course of action. Not just because I have friends and family on both sides of this election either. But mostly because I was consistently reminded

The Epic Almost Epic Merge!

As of today, Almost Epic has a little bit of a different look and feel than in the past. This is due to my recent decision to merge both this site with my personal blog formerly located at joseph.almostepic.net. As a blog and web community, Almost Epic was initially conceived to be an open community of like-minded individuals that could share and collaborate and “geek out” about the

October Update

I haven’t updated this space in over a month. Normally when a blog or website of mine has gone over a month without an update, it’s probably because I’m questioning whether or not the blog or website is even a good idea anymore because I’ve run out of interesting things to write about and nobody really cares anyway, right? Why bother? As it turns out, this time it’s
