The Weekly Roundup!
In case you missed the big kickoff on 8/4/18, I’ve started a new feature here on Almost Epic called The Weekly Roundup!! It’s my opportunity every weekend to round up this week’s coolest, funniest, most heartwarming (or heartbreaking!), geekiest stuff to share with all of you in one great big enormous smorgasboard of greatness. And remember, you can always view all the roundup posts by visiting #WeeklyRoundup! Let’s dive in!

FYI: You may encounter affiliate links in these or other posts of mine. Clicking on these or joining services that they link to can benefit me or Almost Epic directly. But no worries: Absolutely all opinions and thoughts are genuine and my own!

#1. Hoosier Hospitality

Everyone knows that I love animals. But what you might not know is that underneath my gruff, “I hate people” persona, I actually love when people do the right thing. I guess you could say that it helps restore my faith in humanity. And that’s exactly what this story has done.

Back in July, a local animal shelter out in Hendricks County posted to Facebook begging for donations. They were running low on pet food and supplies and were quickly about to exhaust what little was left. Astonishingly, they didn’t receive a single donation afterwards. Things seemed pretty dire until local and social media picked up on the story and the shelter once again asked for donations.

Things went a bit different this time. Indiana residents and people from all over the country stepped up to the plate and sent so many donations that the shelter has nearly run out of space to store it! Check out a local news broadcast from WISH-TV on the story below:

For those interested, the shelter is still accepting donations that can be sent or dropped off in person to 250 E. Campus Boulevard in Danville, IN.

#2. The Return of Patrick Stewart

It’s definitely a good time to be a Trekkie! In addition to the circulating rumors that CBS All Access is interested in developing new Star Trek content year-round, it was also officially announced by the man himself that Sir Patrick Stewart will be returning to one of the roles that made him famous: Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

Rather than a reboot, the new series featuring Picard will be something of a sequel. It will explore the next chapter of the character’s life, perhaps after his decades-spanning career in Starfleet. Although other characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation have made appearances in other entries of the franchise, we haven’t seen Picard in action since 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.

Personally, I feel like the chance to revisit Jean-Luc is well overdue. It will join the franchise’s current series, Star Trek: Discovery, on streaming platform CBS All Access next year.

#3. Humble Bundle

#4. Book Club?

This one is a little bit more of a proposal than a cool thing that happened this week, but it’s something that could potentially become something cool, so I’m going with it.

I love reading! I mean, I don’t really think you develop a love of writing or blogging without having at one point in your life been an avid reader. But I have a lot of trouble staying focused on books that aren’t interesting to me. I get free ebooks for my Kindle Fire all the time, but so rarely are they well-written or in a genre that’s really going to grip my attention. So I have a proposal to any of my regular readers out there that enjoy reading: Want to form an Almost Epic Book Club??

#5. Hulu with LIVE TV!

Just about everyone that I know is already on the Netflix bandwagon. I mean, if you don’t have a Netflix subscription, are you even alive? But I always feel like most people are really underestimating the power of what is probably the second-best streaming service: Hulu!

Come TV with us with a subscription to Hulu!
Come TV with us with a subscription to Hulu!

Unlike Netflix, Hulu actually streams current seasons of TV shows that aren’t original to its service! I mean, sure Netflix has its super cool original content, but when it comes to current episodes of my new favorite show Making It or the upcoming new season of This Is Us, I’m totally screwed unless I have cable or one of those crazy digital antenna box things. No more. We added LIVE TV and HBO to our Hulu subscription and it’s like having cable all over again. I can watch Making It and This Is Us now as well as the latest season of HBO’s Westworld or the incredible Hulu original series The Handmaid’s Tale, which you have no doubt heard nothing but good things about, right? Plus, I can watch my local channels live, so I never have to miss the nightly news or sports coverage.

And guess what? I don’t have to pay the outrageous fees cable companies like Comcast and Verizon charge to get it! Talk about WINNING!

As a gift from me to you, click here to enjoy your first 30 days of Hulu for FREE!
